MTD use a Hydrogear Hydrostatic trans. They are all notorious for the condition you are describing. Your problem is you have condensation built up in the oil. You will need to remove the transaxle from the unit and turn it upside down to drain the oil out into a drain pan. Remove the air vent hose and drain through the hose nipple from the top of the trans case. Allow the trans to drain very well, possibly overnight. Refill the trans now with it out of the unit. Fill it with SAE 20W-50 detergent motor oil. The capacity will depend on how much you drained from the case, but when bone dry it will hold 80 ounces or the equivelant of 2 1/2 quarts. Now using a drill press or a good drill with a speed of 1000-1500 RPM, Rotate the input shaft in a clockwise direction and engage the bypass valve or lever. Stroke the control lever forward for five seconds and then reverse for five seconds. Continue this purging operation for three times in both directions. return the control lever to neutral and disengage the bypass valve. Once again stroke the control lever to forward then reverse and so on for three more times. If you feel that there may still be air in the unit continue this proceedure as many times as you feel needed to properly purge the unit. Once you have fully purged the unit the oil level should be between 1 3/4" to 2" inches from the top of the housing at the air vent hole with the nipple removed from the case. Use a depth gauge or something similar to gauge the height of the oil. Now reinstall the unit in the tractor and it should be O.K.! Good Luck
